Let’s Meet Sonic

At this point, it’s becoming clear that the crossovers of this show are mostly made in the name of fun.  That said, they’ve always been a good opportunity to expand the world of the series with exactly how many heroes are out there.  There’s even some intrigue to exactly who the likes of K.O. will end up meeting.

As fate would have it, in this cartoon, while he’s going about a typical day of working at Lakewood Plaza Turbo, speeding through the doors is the one and only Sonic the Hedgehog.  Now while I am aware that Sonic is a very popular character, given that I’m not a big gamer, I have very little knowledge on him.  However, with the minimal knowledge I do have, I find that even someone like me can easily have a lot of fun with this cartoon.  Sonic himself is well-defined with a huge ego, but enough heart as shown with his brotherly bond with his two-tailed fox companion, Tails, and getting along well with K.O.  In fact, he takes such a strong liking to K.O., that Tails frequently gets jealous at the prospect of Sonic considering K.O. his sidekick.

Anyway, Sonic has dropped by at the plaza having heard that they sell his favorite snack, chili dogs.  Upon seeing the ad, K.O. is quick to tell that it’s all a trap set up by Boxmore.  Creatively popping out of a 2-dimensional ad, Darrell and Jethro capture Rad and Enid who are literally sleeping through the whole thing.  The latter element is especially a creative addition for showing how they’re not present for the unfolding action, and its visualization is very funny.

So the pursuit for K.O.’s friends becomes clear, and the chase is on for fast-paced action only Sonic the Hedgehog can deliver.  Of course, the speed of his mad dash after the robots is great, but the real highlights come when they reach Boxmore.  For one thing, as part of its nature, the company leader, Lord Boxman, is modeled after a Sonic villain called Eggman also known as Dr. Robotnik.  He uses a Sonic-inspired obstacle of a loop as the only way to get to Rad and Enid which is easy for Sonic and Tails, but not so much for K.O.  Surprisingly it’s Tails who turns out to be the bigger help, advising K.O. to get over the loop by visualizing a finish line like what he did when he first got Sonic as someone to look up to.  I wonder if that was the case with the real Tails.

Anyway, through following a trail of rings and passing an exit sign, staples of the Sonic games, K.O. reaches his friends about to be crushed.  Before he can save them, he winds up in a machine that completely roboticizes him, or turns into a robot.  I believe that was part of the premise to one of the Sonic TV shows.  There’s more exciting chases this time from Sonic and the robotic K.O., now called Metal K.O., that really bring to mind what Sonic’s video games are probably like.  The same is true for a possible death trap when they end up near water, which is bad news for both K.O. and Sonic.  They both end up there with the water apparently yet inexplicably turning K.O. back to normal.  Tails manages to save them and even uses his own talents to buy K.O. enough time to save Rad and Enid.

Before long, another quirky adventure of K.O. with other heroes ends well and is capped off with one last Sonic callback.  It’s an authentic recreation from one of Sonic’s TV shows which offers a comedic take on a valuable lesson.  However, it’s more of one Rad and Enid should learn about sleeping through life.  Either way, it’s funny stuff.  A lot of this cartoon is probably better suited for those who know Sonic well, but it’s still big on entertainment, great energy, and animated approaches to life.
