Deep Space Vacation

This cartoon in a way continues off of the last one while also mainly exists as its own thing.  It uses Rad’s family reunion on Planet X as more of a backdrop for its story, but at the forefront is a space adventure with a few contained surprises.  Some of them even go in dark areas.

While Rad’s away, the focus is on K.O. and Enid wishing they could attend the reunion too, giving particular attention to the promising feast.  That said, since they were clearly present in the previous cartoon as holograms, there’s a bit of a contrivance that they’d be this pressed to visit Rad.  Anyhow, through a seemingly generous demeanor, Mr. Gar decides to let them have the day off to go into space to visit Rad.  At the same time, there’s a feeling that this visit will come with a secret mission as indicated by K.O. and Enid donning their secret mission outfits as they take off.  They also have a tricked out space bike designed to explore the galaxy in style.

Truth be told, space is easily a neat backdrop for such travel.  However, as is the case with most trips, it gets especially interesting once K.O. and Enid start seeing the sights along the way.  After everything seems nice at the start, things take peculiar turns when they meet one of most notable villains of the series, Cosma the lizard woman.  The catch is that she’s grown exponentially huge that the only place she could possibly fit in is deep space.  She claims to be taking time off to enjoy the galaxy’s finest cuisine which seems perfectly innocent.  However, it turns out that her appetite is much bigger than it seems, dangerously bigger in fact.

When describing what she’s been eating, Cosma reveals that she didn’t exactly eat the feast of Planet X’s family reunion.  No, she really devoured the entire Planet X, meaning Rad and his family have been completely consumed.  It’s no doubt that K.O. and Enid’s disturbed reaction perfectly reflects the implications of what they’ve just learned.  Nevertheless, they do what they can to try and save their friend by getting Cosma to cough him up Planet X.  There’s a few more neat shots of space and even more appealing finds like colorful asteroids.  They don’t work, and it isn’t long before K.O. and Enid experience dangers of their own.  Despite all determination to save their friend and his home planet no matter how hard it may seem, they get sucked into a black hole, the biggest death trap space can offer.

Then there’s a mixture of sadness of K.O. and Enid sadly lamenting over failing to save their friend, and humor from the ways the black hole stretches their bodies.  It may still feel like the humor is out of place, but then they get a call from Rad who’s completely nonchalant about the situation.  Despite being eaten along with his home planet, he and his family are unmoved by all of this, leaving K.O. and Enid disturbed that Rad isn’t taking this seriously.  As it turns out though, they amusingly have things under control.  According to the family reunion rituals, the family toasts each other in a ceremonial belch.  That goes for everyone from the jocks to the nerds, and it’s kind of unsettling.

Still, it’s undeniably effective as this act gets them out, and Planet X goes right back into orbit, indicating that sometimes problems can just solve themselves.  This may be true, but you really can’t blame K.O. and Enid for fearing the worst; it was just that legit.  Also, how could they use the bike to get out of the black hole when it was clearly left outside?  Either way their final reunion with Rad is very nice to see as is his decision to leave the reunion early to get home with his friends.  That said, this does leave his character arc from last time less compelling than it could be.

Overall, this isn’t the best story of the show, but it’s certainly fun and enjoyable enough as it is.
