Let’s Get Shadowy

The underlying story of this show certainly got more intriguing the moment thetruth of K.O.’s father was dropped.  A follow-up to such a reveal was definitely inevitable, and that’s what this cartoon offers all to a solid world-building character-driven extent.

Like a kid dropped off at the home of a divorced parent for a weekend, K.O. approaches his father, Professor Venomous with understandable unease.  Setting him apart from the norm is how he knows that spending time with the source of the villain blood coursing through him will help him learn about his inner darkness.  Still, bonding with a total sadistic villain like Professor Venomous is not easy as K.O. sticks to his grounds of wanting to be a hero and refusing to go along with his father’s evil suggestions.

That said, one thing that piques K.O.’s attention is Professor Venomous’ suggestion to defeat some enemy he never could.  To K.O., that enemy is Shadowy Figure, the sleazy cloaked figure responsible for the unleashing of T.K.O.  From here, the cartoon is all about investigation and research to find where Shadowy Figure is now as well as his background.  There’s attempts at researching him on the internet, visits to usual spots like Lakewood’s glorb tree and homes of other villains, and breaks in the case from former comrades.

In addition, K.O. and Professor Venomous are joined by Fink who offers an interesting atmosphere to the investigation.  As the others talk about finding Shadowy Figure, Fink constantly points out how their plan is a bad one, usually with an explosive temperamental remark.  It would be very easy to just write off Fink’s rants and lack of cooperation of her simply being a brat even if her line deliveries and facial expressions make them quite funny.  Ultimately though, she turns out to be a major lead in the case.

After K.O. and Professor Venomous find coordinates to where the likes of Foxtail got glorbs from Shadowy Figure, Fink is pushed to show them exactly where this site is.  On the surface, Professor Venomous recognizes wreckage of the remains of his old lair that Lord Boxman recklessly destroyed.  Then when Fink is asked how she knew where this Shadowy Figure siting was, she blurts out that it’s because Professor Venomous is Shadowy Figure.  So Laserblast is really three characters at once instead of two.  It sounds like overkill, but the reasons behind this justify this set of events.

It’s all a result of one of Laserblast’s experiments to get his powers back.  One actually succeeded, but he didn’t know because they’re only there when he’s Shadowy Figure who made sure he never knew the truth.  Fink never told Professor Venomous this out of fear of losing her boss, though it seems like she kept it secret too well.  Yes, she knows he’s always tired as a result of that, but no prior cartoons made it obvious that she knew her boss was someone else.  Anyway, like with K.O., Professor Venomous’ helplessness fully transforms him to a brutal extent.  K.O. and Fink have to team up, and it’s impressive that despite their rivalry, their compatibility beats Shadowy Figure.  Then there’s good hope to end on when Professor Venomous promises both kids he’ll look into his condition and stop it for good like a genuinely loving father.  What was dark in the quest’s atmosphere turns out to be very pleasing, at least for now.  For that, this cartoon can be considered a well-constructed follow-up to a major reveal.
