Chip’s Damage
An appealing factor that can work in a story’s favor is bringing together characters you’d never expect to see teamed up, especially if they both have a common interest. That’s a strong selling point for this cartoon providing long-awaited closure to Season 2’s reveal about former revered hero, Chip Damage.
The fact is that he’s still revered among most heroes since they don’t know that he’s actually a robot and a fake persona. As he was a major Chip Damage fan himself, K.O. has frequently shown disdain over his idol and inspiration being nothing more than a phony. Even if he’s made these feelings known though, they still hurt. The story gets more interesting than ever with the arrival of the new head of P.O.I.N.T. Prep, Elodie. Stepping out from her usual reveling in popularity and perfection or interacting with Enid, Elodie appoints K.O. for a special assignment.
Following a look at how she’s run P.O.I.N.T. Prep, demonstrating solid maturity and leadership, Elodie reveals something she has in common with young K.O. Her plan is to reboot Chip Damage into a more ideal hero who won't do any of the dark manipulative practices he carried out in the past. K.O. is apprehensive at first, but Elodie brings up a refreshing point of view on the matter. Even if Chip wasn’t real, everything he stood for is, which is why she founded a special fan forum devoted to him. Instantly a flood of memories of chatting on the forum and talking about the greatness of Chip’s heroism comes back to K.O. In fact, having someone else to revel in such a topic like Elodie is very rewarding. It’s much like finding a common interest in just about any form of media from someone you meet within a sea of people who don’t get what you’re praising. I know I can relate to that.
With all this said, K.O. and Elodie take the Chip Damage robot and apply all the best hero traits they can think of. Despite things going well, a field test leads to Chip causing a lot of calamities to the likes of Lakewood Plaza Turbo in the name of him doing good heroic deeds. Once one short montage gets K.O. and Elodie to realize they messed up greatly, Chip is quickly stopped by his original creator, Dr. Greyman. K.O. and Elodie own up to what they did as Greyman states that even if they meant well, manipulating Chip to act as they wanted is no different from what happened before. Out of these events, they all go with the best and most healthy option of letting Chip act as his own hero instead of treating him like a machine.
Oddly
enough, Chip decides that the best thing to do with his life is self-destruct,
which is overly morbid and may send some misguided messages. However, staging makes it seem that the real
takeaway is celebrating your own strengths and not worrying about perfection, a
much healthier message and mindset. For
Elodie to go along with it is huge for her character too. It makes the cartoon come off as
inspirational as well as a refreshing way to get around in life and helping the
series be as great as it is.
