Kevin Party
The fallout between Steven and Connie has honestly gone out
too long at this point. In-universe, the
fact that they haven’t spoken to each other in weeks is pretty ridiculous. Despite showing the big problems with the
arc, this is still a decent conclusion to it.
It even adds a shred of humanity to one of the show’s worst
characters.
In his two appearances, there was
a lot of unpleasantness to the character Kevin. He was
introduced as a harassing hunk and a jerk for the fun of it. Here however, as he tries to coax Steven into coming
to a party he’s throwing, it seems that those experiences have shaped him
some. Rather than feeling he’s the best,
Kevin feels intimidated by Stevonnie and believes he needs to be around them to
better himself. This makes sense
considering how heavily involved Stevonnie was in those past cartoons. Steven smartly ignores Kevin, but soon
latches onto his goading the moment he mentions that he already invited Connie
to come. It may be concerning that
Steven is going along with someone who makes him uncomfortable, but at the same
time, it’s a believable showing of desperation.
He’s agreed to give Connie her space while she’s mad at him, but with the
suggestion that she accepted the invite to see him, how can he not pass up this
chance to talk?
At the party though,
Steven sees Connie with a new haircut and happily socializing with others. Considering the suspicions of her leaving
Steven in the dark for weeks, it does make his belief that Connie’s moved on
without him very easy to buy. For advice
on dealing with this, Steven turns to Kevin even more. He tells Steven that instead of being
emotionally honest with Connie, the right thing to do is pretend he’s having a
great time to make her feel jealous. Of
course there are a lot of problems with this, and even though Steven is
desperate, it’s still hard to go along with him taking this obviously bad advice. Funnily, Kevin gains even more humanity out of these moments. He’s helping Steven win back Connie for his
own gain so they can fuse into Stevonnie to make the party cooler, but his
efforts do feel very genuine. There’s
also a belief that he acts this way out of sadness over a breakup with a girl
named Sabina. Then when his advice frustrates
Connie and makes her believe Steven is best friends with Kevin now, Kevin
laments about not knowing how to talk to friends. He’s like a fleshed out character who
legitimately doesn’t know how to socialize.
Just as Connie’s about to leave, Steven rushes to make things better by
talking. It turns out that Connie was
never trying to ignore Steven and only felt comfortable talking to him in
person. Some could argue that she
could’ve just sent a message telling him this, but he could have kept questioning
her as to why she felt this way making her lose track of her problem. Plus, she already thought she’d see Steven at
the party which further gives decent reason to her mindset. Still, a sign that she still cared for Steven
would have been nice within the weeks of silence. Then Steven finally acknowledges to her how wrong he was to give up and go back on his vow of togetherness in the
previous Homeworld invasion. Considering
that this was the only thing that truly upset Connie at the start, it’s heartwarming
that even after all this time, this is all Steven needs to do to win her back. It is still really one-sided that she never properly acknowledges
Steven’s good intentions to save everyone though.
At least the space missions she’s part of after this prove her worth and
suggest that she and Steven really are better off tackling them together. As for Kevin, the kids leave together without
fusing for him, but since that would’ve been for his selfish gain, it's an acceptable loss.
This last part of the fallout arc brings a
fair share of concerns, but the nice character development and heart of Steven
and Connie reconciling nicely makes up for it.
Plus, with this matter settled, Season 5 can finally start
getting really interesting.
