Sadie
Killer
The Beach City residents may not all have a lot of important
moles in the show’s main story, but it’s still worth noting how the big Gem
events end up changing their lives for the better. This especially applies to this fifth
season. The biggest example of this is
Lars getting lost in space and growing a braver more caring backbone as a
result. With this in mind, it’s also
appropriate to see how recent Gem events reshape the lives of those he’s close
to, and Sadie is arguably his closest companion.
The start of this cartoon already shows what
it’s like for her to be away from him.
She’s visibly worn out from having to run the Big Donut all by herself,
and while doing all the work isn’t exactly new for her, just being alone makes
it feel worse. It also puts Sadie’s job
at her most relatable. Running a donut
shop is in the category of simple jobs people start out with, but if you’re at
it for a long time, you’re bound to feel depressed over not going
anywhere. That’s pretty much Sadie’s
feelings on the job all over.
At the
same time, Steven has been joining Sour Cream, Jenny Pizza, and Buck Dewey of
the Cool Kids in a band. Considering the
drama he’s been through lately, it’s actually kind of fitting that he’s taking
up this emotional outlet. There’s
actually a short about how music is a great way to help him deal with heavy
stuff anyway. The news of the band
intrigues Sadie, though of course she can’t find the time to check out the
practice because of her work.
Sympathizing with her feelings, the band decides to follow her home to
practice at her place one night.
From
there, a fresh new start for Sadie starts taking form bringing together a
talent of hers first brought up in Season 2, and starting to bond with the Cool
Kids back in “The Good Lars.”
The band
is still trying to come up with their own sound, and when it gets too
difficult, they break from practice and check out Sadie’s collection of horror
films. This is a believable look at the
creative process when as they sit back and relax from watching the film, they
find the sound they were looking for.
Using the screams from the movie and adding in their own music, Sadie is
eventually led to add her own “provocative lyrics” to the creation. The thing about the lyrics is that they come
completely from the heart about how she feels about her job and how it makes
her feel like a horror creature as a result.
This brings an awesome musical creation called “The Working Dead” to
life priding itself on a well-crafted spooky atmosphere and relatable
undertones. It’s a nice look at what it
takes to craft a musical work of art and seems like a perfect path for Sadie to
take.
Since she still has the Big Donut
to think about, it’s sadly not possible despite how much she enjoys singing and
hanging with the Cool Kids. However,
through confiding with Steven about how her talents come from thinking about
losing her youth to the job and later her close co-worker, everything makes
sense. This brings an appropriate, but
still kind of unexpected ending; with the opportunity for joining a band
present, Sadie quits the Big Donut and joins the Cool Kids at their first
gig. It’s pretty huge considering how
much of a favorite leisure the Big Donut has been, and that it was the very
first location seen in the series. Now
life has left it with no one to run it, at least for the time. With all the time taken to show Sadie
dreading the place and enjoying singing much more though, you’re left believing
this is for the best.
This may not be
the most important cartoon, but its relatability and great music are very
profound.
