Rad’s Alien Sickness
I find it fitting that right after a cartoon about a health week, the next one is about a major sickness that doesn’t hold back in how unpleasant it can be. It also makes a point of what can happen without the rest needed to fully recover.
Just as Rad is about to fulfill a self-proclaimed task of stocking his one millionth box, there’s an alert for an attack. Rather than a robot, the attack is from something to give major relevance to Professor Venomous and Fink taking up residence in Boxmore. With great charisma, they unleash a box of a nasty virus onto K.O., Rad, and Enid, leaving them very ill. K.O. and Enid, however, do the smart thing by going home to rest off their illnesses, but Rad stays behind at the bodega, determined to stock that box.
Sure enough, K.O. and Enid’s rest gets them all better for the next day, but they arrive at work to find a trail of disturbing slime that constantly needs to be cleaned up. It isn’t long before K.O. finds the source of the slime is Rad, and the cartoon goes all out with showing how sick he’s become from staying all night trying to lift one box. With close-ups of gross facial features, slime oozing out, snot getting all over potential remedies, and a slurred speech, to say he’s sick is a total understatement. Actually, his sickness is shown so much, it can be enough to turn people off, but maybe not totally.
Helping the appeal are different approaches to helping Rad. When he says he’s still trying to stock that one millionth box, Enid quickly goes apathetic and claims she doesn’t feel bad for Rad anymore. K.O. is much more caring so he tries to make it so Rad can recover and do what he set out to do. He applies many familiar cures to his friend like soup, steam, herbal tea, and more, but they’re all ineffective. As mentioned before, Rad’s onslaught of snot prevents them from being able to work. Then as if his sickness couldn’t get more disturbing, he literally falls to bits because of his lack of rest, and can’t even be moved. It’s at the point where he has to be quarantined by being covered by boxes in that very stock room which is a side effect of illness that’s believable yet still humorously portrayed.
Another Boxmore attack comes in after this, and it appears easy enough for K.O. and Enid as it’s an attack from one of the lesser robots, Ernesto. Apparently as a result of Professor Venomous’ involvement at Boxmore, there are no lesser robots as Ernesto is given a major upgrade allowing him to put up a strong fight. K.O. and Enid can’t beat him easily, and Rad notices this. Wanting to help his friends despite his illness, he struggles to get up and out of the bodega, and saves the day with a single sneeze to blow Ernesto up. As an aside, it also makes for a funny destruction of Professor Venomous’ car who’s already concerned of a scratch.
Even if Rad did save the day, a
point is still made that he must get better for real. After spending the whole cartoon being
stubborn, be does so the alien way by cocooning himself which apparently counts
as his one millionth box. I personally
don’t get how that works. This cartoon
may not be the most appealing with questionable antics from the title character
and a large emphasis on gross-outs. Still, it’s a worthy entry for making good
points about proper illness recovery.
