K.O.’s Health Week

Normally, when a work goes out of its way to be educational, it can compromise potentially strong entertainment.  Thankfully, this cartoon avoids that outcome and really makes the most out of the material, coming off just as fun as it is informative.

For one thing, there’s a legitimate reason to go into full on education mode.  There’s a health week that goes on at the plaza every year, and K.O. has the chance to put it all together this time.  The notion of a small 6-11 year old child putting together a series of informative lectures about healthy habits is endearing in a sense.  For that, all education that comes out of this cartoon can be seen as an impressive stretch of research and presentation, aiding in making what’s taught entertaining.

When it comes to hygiene, K.O. explains the benefits of things like brushing teeth, cleaning your body, and using deodorant all in a chipper tone and vibrant visualizations.  The latter is a true testament of this health lecture’s entertainment value with K.O. turning into things like toothbrushes and his friends representing things like sweat drops.  Elements like that bring out a fun factor that would otherwise be hard to come by in something meant to be solely educational.

Other topics even broaden the scope of the subject of health.  One of the days of the week has K.O. teaching about mental health which come with a funny scenario.  At the frame store, Brandon the bear talks about how he’s nothing but trouble much to the annoyance of his co-worker, A Real Magic Skeleton.  Despite how half-hearted he sounds and not even feeling that bad when saying these things, K.O. gives a passionate speech about the importance of loving oneself.  The humor comes from how what’s taught and what’s shown are so different yet work pretty well.

Funny scenes also come from a lesson on nutrition where K.O. calls out Colewort the broccoli for gorging on soda and burgers.  K.O. has the right idea to promote eating vegetables, except Colewort is a vegetable, making for an oblivious showing of cannibalism so to speak.

Self-esteem is amusingly over-the-top as K.O. takes coffee shop worker, Barista Pup, to an astral plain, acting overdramatic when talking about the topic.  Really, all Barista Pup needs to overcome any self-esteem issues is water.

For the last topic, exercise, things get at their most interesting when the Boxmore robots get involved.  There’s actually continuation of their bonding and a good side being found in these villains as K.O. interrogates them for interfering with his health plans.  They actually go along with his exercise plan of a hike, and enjoy themselves greatly.

That’s not even all though as they prove productive in helping K.O.  There’s an apparent healthy oversight on his part when K.O. becomes so tired over putting together the health week that he falls over an edge. They themselves give K.O. a lecture on the importance of sleep, highlighted by psychedelic visuals of the robots changing in shape and color.  Even nicer is that they take him home so he can finally get all the sleep he needs.  It’s perhaps their most genuinely friendly moment in the series, even if K.O. punches them back to Boxmore when he’s all rested.

This cartoon runs the risk of being dull and corny in its education, but with an effective mix of comedy, creative visuals, and even character development, it’s impressively fun.

A+
