Special Delivery

As fun as this show is when it comes to its antics, expressions, and fast-paced action, it knows how to bring out heart when it comes to developing characters.

This time around, the featured characters are two of the main ones, Rad and Enid.  They’re assigned to deliver a package out of town, and the following cartoon is all about their conversations in Rad’s van which brings a new layer of endearment to their bond.  You wouldn’t expect what they talk about to be so interesting, but that’s how this cartoon works as a surprise.  The conversations are basically small talk about little things that Rad brings up and Enid replies with edgy sass.  Rad shows off a new modification to his van, and Enid brings up the harsh fact that they never work with a reference to a legit past modification to prove her point.  Rad tries out impersonations of people in his life, and Enid aggressively responds by even going as far as to impersonate Rad.  Rad wants to stop at a food stand, but Enid quickly shoots down the possibility with three very similar flashbacks of Rad being unable to handle spicy food.

There’s a break in the action when Rad’s music playlist starts playing an upbeat and fun pop song that he and Enid break out singing.  It’s all in good fun watching them bond like this especially with music worked in, but then Enid stops another pop song from playing just when it’s starting.

It’s at this point where Rad starts feeling legitimately hurt by Enid’s attitude and feels like she’s just making fun of him.  Given their characters and their usual dynamic, this is somewhat of a twist to expectations.  Eventually they make it to the city, but not before they run into a jerk biker gang, and Rad gets captured and used as a hood ornament for the lead biker.  Enid takes control of the van and the excitement picks up in an exciting chase that puts many of the sights seen on the trip to good use.  They run through the spicy food stand, and Enid uses the van’s new modification to save Rad and the package.

However, Rad doesn’t want to go in, revealing to actually be hurt over Enid’s attitude, and everything the entire delivery was building up to says a lot about their dynamic.  Enid doesn’t see her joking around as too bad as she flat out says that’s how their dynamic works.  Rad knows this, but it still hurts.  Then Enid gives a believable reason for why she goes along with it.  She’s many things like a witch, a ninja, a hero in training, and an employee at a convenience store; with so many identities she doesn’t have anything figured out.  All of this makes sense for what’s known of Enid, and further plays a role in making her the most developed character in the cast.  Above all, she lets Rad know that no matter what, he is important to her and actually does like hanging out with him.

It turns out that the entire delivery was a test by Mr. Gar for Rad and Enid to realize their importance as the package contained a scrapbook of all their times together.  So ultimately, going on this delivery together was certainly for the greater good though you have to wonder how Mr. Gar was able to take all those pictures of them.  It’s true that there are more interesting cartoons than this, but it’s worth noting how much it says about team dynamics of some of the show’s most important heroes.
