Red Action to the Future
Some of the supporting heroes of Lakewood Plaza Turbo are more interesting than others, but thankfully, Red Action is among the more interesting ones. She’s got a nice laid-back personality, creative background as a futuristic warrior, and has shown good signs of development. Much of that development comes from legit chemistry with Enid that brings out the best in both of them. This is the main source of appeal of this cartoon.
It starts with Red Action simply hanging out with Enid and K.O. at the bodega, one of the true highlights of living in the past for her. It’s also the cartoon’s first showing of genuineness between her and Enid’s relationship. Their fun times together are soon brought to an abrupt stop when her old team, the Hue Troopers, calls her over to help fight in a war in the distant future. As Red Action sets off to play her part in the war, the cartoon goes full on endearing while constantly hinting that Enid is closer to her than ever before. Often times Red Action will come back to this precise time period for random reasons while showing how brutal the war is becoming.
Enid is very supportive of Red Action fighting a good cause, but you can tell that something else is on her mind. The cartoon doesn’t even stall on this matter for too long when a talk with K.O. reveals that Enid is worried about what this war will do to Red Action. She’s so warped into putting up a good fight for the future that she could very well move on and forget about Enid. Just the very notion of Enid worrying that Red Action will just put her out of her life is very telling of how important she is to her. It’s almost like they’re more than just friends.
At K.O.’s insistence, Enid decides that if she values Red Action so much, she should go over to the future and help fight in the war even if the Hue Troopers decided against it. Enid makes her way there and finds that the war is a major lost cause for the Hue Troopers with their tactics of hitting giant robots with plasma rays getting them nowhere. With the robots growing stronger, Enid takes immediate action by turning herself into a stump and letting Red Action fire her at one. It’s a pretty cool way to finally get some progress, but it seems that the war has effected Red Action maturely after all. Even if Enid’s plan worked, she’s quick to admonish her for coming up with something so reckless. Slightly offended, Enid forgets that she came to tell Red Action that she wants to be with her and goes back to her old time period with a snarky remark.
However, such a remark leaves her with hard regret which also makes her relationship more noteworthy than average. Then Red Action appears much older and accomplished, thanking Enid for inspiring victory in the war. As pleasing as this is, it’s still quite emotional as Red Action declares she’s staying in the future to fight more wars. You can imagine Enid feels quit crushed over this, but that doesn’t last long. Red Action turns out to be present in her current form leaving for a very intimate embrace between her and Enid. How is this possible you ask? From what I understand, the real Red Action never left since her future adult self thought she wasn’t ready for the war. What happened was a plan for Enid to influence it without Red Action getting involved. I at least think that’s what happened because the explanation’s a tad too complex for me to make out.
This may be a confusing ending, but this
cartoon’s great heart between two great characters makes it very strong.
