'Toon Reviews 12: DuckTales Vol. 2 Part 13: Merit Time Adventure

Merit-Time Adventure

This episode mixes in a Junior Woodchucks merit-badge plot with a threat to Scrooge’s fortune plot.  Put together, the plots are told well, but can seem a little too familiar at times.  With the Junior Woodchucks, we see the usual conventions from the characters involved like Huey, Dewey, and Louie showing great devotion to their troop and determination to get more merit badges, Launchpad as their big-hearted troop leader, and Doofus Drake not being very productive and mostly eating and taking things too literally. Surprisingly, the standout character in this part of the episode is Webby.  While it is very confusing as to how she’s suddenly become a Junior Woodchuck when she wasn’t part of the troop in any prior episode, she has her own relatable arc in a rare instance of being more than just a cute little girl.  She only has one merit badge and longs to get even more to live up to the standards her other Junior Woodchuck friends, and her determination is easy to feel as she spends the episode researching how to man a boat and turns out to know what to do the best in the group.  Her skills are especially put to good use in Scrooge’s part of the plot.  It’s about how one of his ships, the Lucky Duck, is attacked and destroyed by a sea monster and has apparently swallowed the first mate, Quackerbill.  If that’s not enough, all of Scrooge’s cargo is free to be salvaged by anyone because its ship was sunk, primarily by another one of the show’s incarnations of Pete, Dogface Pete.  Of course, Scrooge is prompted to investigate the truth behind the sea monster with his fortune on the line.  From this description of this part of the plot, that’s when the story becomes a little too familiar.  Think about it, a ship carrying Scrooge’s fortune getting attacked by what appears to be a sea monster.  That’s about the same as what happened in one of the parts of the “Catch as Cash Can” arc which wasn’t too long ago.  It even includes a scene where Scrooge is “swallowed” by the monster and everyone mourns him while trying to believe that he may still be alive just like that one episode.  By then, it would probably be easy to guess that the sea monster is fake, and that’s just what’s revealed later on.  I don’t mind the use of clichés, but recycling plot points from very recent episodes is a bit ridiculous.  There are some good twists though like Dogface Pete, who Scrooge thought was responsible for the monster, turning out to be sympathetic towards Scrooge by helping him try to beat it, and Quackerbill turning out to be the monster’s true mastermind and using it to salvage money from sunken ships, generic villain motivation as it is. Plus, the fact that it’s cute little Webby who takes charge in the end and saves the day for the Junior Woodchucks and Scrooge is an interesting resolution for the conflict at hand, and the ending moment where she finally gets additional merit badges is a great way to cap everything off.  Even if the some story points are recycled in parts, this is still a solid episode fueled by notable character moments and a few good twists. 9/10

Catch as Cash Can Part 2: A Whale of a Bad Time

Given all the exciting and creative moments that happened in the previous part of this story arc, this part more than continues to build upon what was set up.  It all happens when Scrooge is still worried about Flintheart getting to his fortune, so he comes up with a plan to move it out to sea to keep it out of reach with the aid of trucks carrying it disguised as ice cream trucks.  While this move does sound smart, circumstances don’t turn out as planned when a sea monster is reported to have eaten half of Scrooge’s money thought to be ice cream, which by the way, results in a comedic highlight of Scrooge throwing a violent temper tantrum over the news.  The episode then shifts its focus to a deep-sea adventure to track down the reported sea monster and retrieve Scrooge’s fortune.  While that goes on, the navy has a problem of their own when their top-secret submarine shaped like a whale goes missing, and become suspicious of Scrooge coming across it while he’s out in the ocean.  That’s where Donald Duck enters the episode as he goes along with Scrooge’s search while also making sure his uncle doesn’t find the submarine, and throughout the adventure, they both continue to come off as an entertaining pairing.  Scrooge is knowledgeable and level-headed when working through the task at hand while Donald is easily ticked off by whoever they come across which leads to his classic tempers including pushing various buttons without knowing what they do.  This pairing is eventually dragged into the sea-monster conflict when they, along with Scrooge’s other money ships, are swallowed by the whale sub.  It turns out that Flintheart has staged a deal with the sub’s inventor, Dr. Bluebottle, to use it to steal Scrooge’s money which will apparently get Dr. Bluebottle the fame and fortune he’s always dreamed of.  To say the least about him, it’s interesting that a short squeaky-sounding old man would turn out this diabolically evil, and he even fights back the navy really well when they start attacking with death charges making for an awesome action scene.  Also in this whole plot is an interesting moment where Scrooge, in the heat of the Firefly Fruit challenge, decides to just let his fortune reside in a really deep trench when the steering is shot and the sub is sinking.  The surprising thing about Scrooge needing to let his money go is that he’s not only willing to do it, but confident to just go get it back from the trench which is the focus of the arc’s next part, especially after how determined he was to keep it safe in the first part, not to mention the earlier temper tantrum.  Still, it does its part to get you excited to see what comes next, and the episode as a whole still ends up as one of the best of the show with strong comedy, great use of characters, and demonstrations of the show’s imaginative sense of adventure. 10/10

'Toon Reviews 5: DuckTales Vol 1 Part 26

Bermuda Triangle Tangle

This episode gives us an interpretation of what it’s like in the Bermuda Triangle, the triangular area in the ocean where ships are said to have gotten lost.  It unfolds when Scrooge and the boys set out to uncover one of Scrooge’s cargo ships that was carrying a shipment of chunky peanut butter of all things had gotten lost in the Bermuda Triangle.  As it turns out, this portrayal of the Bermuda Triangle has the creative feature of being so over-grown with seaweed that you can actually walk around without falling into the ocean.  Plus, it’s also shown to contain a group of sailors who live there after the seaweed got caught in the motors of their ships, stranding them in the Bermuda Triangle.  With this in mind, it’s also worth noting that the episode has an interesting theme of different viewpoints of leadership.  To explain, the sailors of the Bermuda Triangle are led by a guy named Captain Bounty who has everyone live off of seaweed, work with seaweed, and insist that there’s no way to escape with all the boats stuck in the seaweed and incessant threats of attacks from a seaweed monster.  Scrooge disapproves of Bounty’s mindset and insists on at least trying to escape all while Captain Bounty insists that he’s ruling with the most care towards everyone’s survival.  What makes these viewpoints work is that they’re both easy to side with.  Of course, you’d want Scrooge to escape, but even if what Bounty wants to do is just give up, when he mentions trying to survive, you see where he’s coming from.  As it turns out though, practically everyone, including Bounty’s followers, want to try and escape the Bermuda Triangle, and when Bounty finds out, instead of revealing to be a bad guy to force his ideals, he listens to everyone’s feelings on the matter and understands them.  So, they ultimately free the ships, and in the process utilize some of Bounty’s survival tips, specifically calming the seaweed monster with a harpsichord in a light-hearted turn of events.  Then, to make the viewpoint of leadership theme remain strong, after Scrooge gets all the sailors, and his cargo ship back to civilization, Bounty, while having grown from this experience, hasn’t been completely changed by it, and the episode ends with him returning to live in the Bermuda Triangle he calls home.  It adds to the appeal of his character, and seems believable to real-life scenarios, which can only benefit the episode in a major way.  Not only is this episode fun and creative with its depiction of the Bermuda Triangle, but it’s written with themes and character moments that make it highly respectful for all in the audience. 9.5/10
