Legs From
Here to Homeworld
It’s hard to follow up on a work as big as “Reunited” but
much of the cartoons that follow are very solid continuations of the Diamonds
learning of Pink’s actual fate.
This one
also uses these events to put into motion a way to finally fix the damage of
the Gem War. For that, it’s quite
appropriate that Steven leads the Crystal Gems to work with their sworn enemies
since this is the only good chance they have to really accomplish things. All the same, it’s very fitting that apart
from Steven, both groups of Gems are majorly at odds with each other. Their differences and tolerances are still
apparent after all. Also working in
their favor is how much Blue and Yellow treat Pink as one of their own, even
though it’s actually Steven which they never really understand. Just because they’re evil dictators doesn’t
mean they can’t show human emotions as a loving family to one of their
own.
As for exactly what damage they’re
setting out to fix is, it involves finally healing the corrupted Gems, which Blue
and Yellow have no idea about. The attack on Earth was meant to destroy Gems,
not turn them into monsters. Testing
their healing on the frequently seen Centipeetle, who is later revealed to be a
Nephrite, they appear to make the best progress so far. She turns back into a humanoid form, speaks
in audible English, and later regains her memory of where she was before
getting corrupted. The catch is that she
can only stay this way when Steven, Blue, and Yellow have a hold on them which
they can’t do forever.
The only way for
the healing to stick is if all four Diamonds work together, leading to the
mentioning of White Diamond. Although
her name was never brought up before, there have always been signs that such a
Diamond exists from apparent things like murals and the design of the Diamond
insignia. Such mystery is also followed
up by frightening mentions about how unlike other Gems, including Yellow and Blue
Diamond, she really is. There’s also
talk of how she’s never left Homeworld in eons, making the prospect of her
coming back to help cure the corrupted Gems difficult.
This sets into motion a plan to just go to
Homeworld and convince White to come to Earth in person. Aiding them is a scene to bring the biggest
relevance to “Lion 4” when Steven discovers the Pink pyramids in the desert are
actually Pink’s ship resembling legs.
Then following some heartwarming goodbyes and Bismuth showing encouragement for Steven and boldness
of not following Diamonds, they set off.
Upon arrival, there are a lot of elements to
Homeworld that make their first reveal, but beg a lot of questions. Why is it all broken up? How did all the Gems present know that Pink
was returning? White’s Pearl makes a
frightening entrance and her background is revealed later on, but what’s up
with the crack in her eye? The fright
factor continues when she takes Steven away from the others without question
and places him before White Diamond herself.
Standing in an emotionless stance and expressing unenthused happiness
about ‘Pink’s’ return, she brings an intentionally creepy atmosphere to the
scene. Finally, she just ignores
Steven’s greeting and sends him to what looks like Pink Diamond’s old
room.
Admittedly, this cartoon does have
a lot happening at once so it can be hard to take everything in. However, through going in with an open mind,
despite many things coming all at once, you’ll find that what it reveals are executed in what may be the best possible
way.
