An Ed Too Many

It seems like when it comes to matters of romance with this show, there’s no escaping from whoever expresses feelings for the Eds which they don’t share.  We already have the Kanker sisters, but with this cartoon, the featured lover happens to be the ever bratty and temperamental Sarah.  To make the story all the more ironic when it comes to how things go, it starts with them finding a four-leaf clover yet still don’t have good luck.
During their search they also find a very rare flower that Double D takes an immediate liking to.  By chance, they come across Sarah and Jimmy having fun together, and without giving it too much thought, Double D lets Sarah keep the flower.  From this nonchalant gesture, Sarah decides that she and Double D were meant to be.  Considering how all her major appearances have shown her and Jimmy have such strong chemistry, it’s pretty shallow that she’d straight up ditch him because of a flower.  In fact, Jimmy’s sympathy is fully recognizable and understandable as it’s touched upon for the rest of the cartoon.
The Eds on the other hand are setting their sights on just getting through the day, most of it just doing simple pastimes.  There are a few enjoyable moments when making pizza with bulging dough, difficulties in making sauce, and Ed eating all the cheese.  However, no matter what they do, Sarah is always following them around in the name of Double D, and nothing is going to stand in her way.  She’s always keen to greet Double D with a big smile and wide eyes expecting him to invite her along even when he’s not in his own house.
All the way there’s enjoyable character chemistry with Double D too soft-spoken to voice that he wants to be left alone and can only back away.  His friends have to do all the talking to get Sarah away, but her explosive tempers easily counteract their attempts.  Even disregarding the pizza scene, the Eds can’t even go anywhere without Sarah popping out to flirt with Double D.  Her actions are pretty much exactly in line with what the Kankers usually do by forcing Double D into boyfriend gestures he’s not up for and being ignorant of his feelings.  This is especially felt when the Eds are making a dinosaur replica and Double D becomes trapped in quick-drying papier-mache.  Sarah becomes free to force hearts and flowers around him which is a major no-no when it comes to finding love.  At least her quick appearances and genuinely happy attitude don’t make her actions seem creepy despite how wrong they are.
Ed later explains that this behavior is because Sarah gets crazy when Jimmy’s not around.  That’s hard to believe considering Jimmy was present when Sarah first ditched him over Double D and that flower.  Really, it’s Jimmy who acts crazy without Sarah as the cartoon shows his descent starting with extreme sadness, and then going all rabid on aggressive on toys and other kids.  Then when the Eds get him and Sarah back together, they easily forget this whole thing and go off to do something together.  It’s hard to tell if this is true young love or them being ignorant of all problems with their relationship.  One things for sure though, it’s going to take more than a four-leaf clover to bring the Eds good luck, even if they are successful at losing Sarah.
Unfortunate implications of Sarah aside, when you look at the cartoon aesthetically, there’s a good amount of decent fun and cuteness.

A-

Ed-n-Seek

While some people may be put off by the Eds constantly trying to scam the other kids for money, if you analyze the cartoons closely, it’s just their ways of trying to earn their respect. In the first season of this show, more than anywhere else, this is made clear as they do more than just try to get their money.  They genuinely want to join them in certain gatherings of favorite activities such as, in the case of this cartoon, playing hide and seek.  Through creative gags all throughout and a great sense of character from all fronts and even satisfaction in the end, this turns out to be a great performance.
They figure out the hide and seek process as they see one kid after another run to hide in one peculiar place around the cul-de-sac.  Some of the hiding places are completely outrageous like inside a vase or going into a tree that can fit both Kevin and his bike showing that we’re in for a unique hide and seek round.  All the Eds want to do is join in but their overbearing pleas combined with the kids’ unease about them make it difficult for them to be immediately accepted.  Not long after though, they all decide that there really is no harm in letting them play so long as they’re the ones who have to find everyone.  That’s certainly a good attitude when it comes to the game, but things aren’t exactly fair.
For one thing, the kids are quick to get to home base in the form of a blue tree shortly after the Eds count.  Because of this attitude, the Eds have to use major strategy just to have a good shot at hide and seek.  This results in the great ingenuity that exemplifies the effort that goes into their scams.  They uproot home base so the other kids can’t get to it so easily and Double D creates goggles that sense out people’s body heat to track down the hiding places.
Creativity still abounds when they come across all the creative hiding places.  Some aren’t out of the ordinary like inside a shed or bushes, but then you have really odd ones like inside a lawnmower or gutters.  Even without their goggles or moving home base, the Eds are active players as Ed becomes quick to get Jimmy, whom they inadvertently miss, before he reaches home base.
These are impressive tactics for seeking, but the Eds are just as enjoyable when they’re hiding.  They have a creative hiding space in a fake bush which they fill up with all the snacks they could eat.  It’s practically the ideal hiding spot you wish could exist.  They probably could have stayed forever if not for a humorous gag of Ed blowing them sky high with a bunch of sodas.  Even when they have to rush to actually hide, their attempts are kept fun and creative.  Eddy and Double D’s hiding spots are fun enough as they somehow hide in a painting and a fish tank respectively.  Ed’s on the other hand is great fun as he not just hides in a TV where a silent black and white cartoon is playing, but also reshapes himself to fit the style.  Of all the hiding spots, this shows the versatility of cartoons the best.
Then for a grand finish, the Eds actually succeed in getting to home base.  Sure it gets destroyed because of them making it mobile, but it still means they win which is remarkable considering the usual outcome of these cartoons.  As a result, creative gags that are productive to the main cause and fun to watch and especially a satisfying payoff make this cartoon a contender for one of the best.

  1. An Ed Too Many:

Sarah and Jimmy took the limelight in this one, yet it's surprisingly a good episode.

You know, Sarah makes for a far better "clingy girl" than the Kanker Sisters, and the episode showed how that could both be kinda cute and annoying.

What I really liked was Jimmy freaking out with Sarah not around; boy, that kid had issues.

The Eds didn't really do a lot in this one aside from getting a lot of bad luck, but they managed to get Sarah away from them and come out of this one mostly unscathed, so two out of three isn't bad.

    Ed-n-Seek:

Waldo/Wally's got nothing on the Cul-De-Sac kids when it comes to hiding. I just love that this episode, heck, the entire show took full advantage of the fact that it's a cartoon, unlike a lot of other cartoons at the time and even today. Even though the Eds cheated to find all the kids, I don't really blame them seeing that the kids seemed to be cheating too when they didn't even let the Eds look for them.

Also, the Kanker Sisters' appearance in this episode was just random; why were they in a compost canister again?
