Divide
We’re in full swing with the last two episodes of the
season. Much of the prior episodes have
done their part to build up to the big event, and with everything that’s
happened, the finale really delivers and gets off to a strong start.
Following
the rise of Meteora and Moon disappearing after being struck by her, Star is
forced to act as Queen of Mewni, something she has dreaded for quite some
time. In fact, it’s very reminiscent of
how Moon was thrown into such a high position at a young age way back in an
earlier flashback episode. For much of
the first act, Star has to put up with several pressures of a queen’s
responsibilities all of which related to coming up with the best battle
strategy to stop Meteora. At the same
time, she’s plagued with worries for what’s become of her mom and trying to
insist that her position is not forever.
Even if much of what goes on are discussions of battle strategies,
Star’s personal problems with the matter keep it all engaging and
relatable. I mean, anyone is sure to
feel the strains of responsibilities clashing with internal conflicts over
anything. It’s just one of those common
life occurrences.
Anyway, the episode
builds to a more exciting direction when Star finds a good means of offence to
face Meteora. After some consideration
from Marco and a grand display of spells thanks to technically being in his
30s, he’s assigned to take on the task at hand.
This shows how well Star can take on this position by dealing with the
crisis via calling on someone she’s appropriately confident in before taking care of her
own issues. The result is an interesting
team-up of Marco and any interdimensional companions he’s bonded with
throughout the series to go up against Meteora.
Some have helpful fight skills like Tom and Kelly while others are
honestly pretty useless and just add to the forces like Pony Head. Also, I’d like to know how he managed to get
Hekapoo to help when Star understandably demanded nothing to do with the Magic
High Commission.
The actual battle with
Meteora is also a ton of fun as everyone scrambles to lead her into a flaming
donut pit and then running for their lives when she puts out the fire. In spite of an overall intense tone with
desperation and some people losing their souls, there’s still room for solid
comedy. There’s a fake out of a friendly
monster appearing before Meteora shows up, Hekapoo’s talon sidekick talking
about group photos, and Marco leading the whole thing in a dress.
Also, scenes of the battle are intercut with
Star venturing into the Realm of Magic, knowing that’s where Moon is based on
word from Eclipsa. This comes with an
off-putting yet cutely staged occurrence of the elegant Queen Moon Butterfly
hairy and naked with a childish mindset due to amnesia. Even if she is noticeably cured of her
corruption, Moon truly can’t escape the Realm of Magic’s negative effects. Star at least has many reminders to keep her
memory intact so not to repeat what happened during her first visit, but they turn out to be futile. They do help her get to her mom, but her
precautions are not big enough and she ends up failing to bring Moon home when
she’s moments away from doing so. The
final moments of them playing in a calm peaceful setting interestingly work as
a somber conclusion as we also have the status of the Meteora crisis firmly in
mind.
The first part of this season
finale stands as a relatable look at a youth in mature responsible position and
creatively ironic ways of selling an intense tone.
