Now this cartoon is lighter on Gem lore than the others
mainly because its major focus is on Steven going about a basic aspect of
his daily life. Specifically, he makes
an elaborate breakfast and feels it’s so good, he should share it with the Gems,
thus dubbing it, Together Breakfast.
However, the Crystal Gems are all busy with their own matters in their
designated rooms of the temple they live in which are located in areas of a
statue behind Steven’s house. Regarding
Steven and his goal of getting everyone together for breakfast, it can be
looked at in two different ways. He’s
certainly caring and good-natured for wanting to share what he has with those
in his life. However, what he wants is
rather frivolous compared to what everyone else is doing, and he doesn’t even
consider that what the Gems are up to could be very important. He’s just too fixated on what he wants them
all to do, portraying him as oblivious to the world around him which can
get frustrating at times. That said, in
addition to his clear good intentions, Steven’s goal does make for an
interesting look at the rooms of the Crystal Gems’ temple and how they
work. We have Pearl’s room decorated
with waterfalls that reflect her elegance, Amethyst’s room which fits the
slobby part of her character since it’s a total mess filled with useless random
junk, and the Crystal Heart which connects to the temple’s dangerous areas
including the basement filled with bubbled Gems and a fire pit. Each room is creatively designed and has
layouts that make for amusing ways to watch Steven get around such as the
waterfalls of Pearl’s room and halls up to the ceiling going from Amethyst’s
room to the Crystal Heart. Through it
all though, Steven is still too fixated with getting everyone for breakfast to
get that he’s not navigating the temple safely or that Garnet is in the middle of
containing a dangerous Gem in the basement.
Thankfully, when the Gem escapes and takes refuge in the organic
breakfast, Steven does get a shining moment when he forces it into the fire pit
destroying it. Plus, given that he still
genuinely wanted everyone together, it’s appropriate that the cartoon ends with
everyone making a new together breakfast.
In all, Steven’s obliviousness can be frustrating and the story’s not as
interesting as what we got and what we will get, but it’s still worth watching
for its wholesome family values and insight on the Crystal Gems’ lifestyle. 8/10
