You get the feeling this cartoon is going to come off as
amazing when you learn that it factors in both new background on Lion as well
as more of Steven and Connie’s friendship.
Well, amazing is exactly how one would describe this cartoon. It takes the simple plot of Steven and Connie
attempting to ride Lion to the cinema to see the latest Dogcopter movie. The
interesting thing about their attempts is that it’s here where Lion shows off
magical powers so to set him apart from other lions. They include walking on water, as shown in a
nice fun scene backed up by a soothing little music piece, and using his roars
as portals to anywhere at all. The
particular portal he gives off here leads Steven and Connie to a secret Gem
armory filled with an interesting set of weapons which the kids react to with
excitement in an appealing childlike way.
The armory even has the power to grant Steven anything he wishes for, as
he finds out when he wishes to see the movie which awakens a robot that shoots
fireballs and other explosive ammo. It’s
admittedly debatable as to why Lion brought them to the armory at this time,
but given what Steven learns about Gem history later in the season, it’s
fitting that he’s been taken to a place like this. Through this whole story is a sweet layer
brought about by Steven and Connie’s friendship mainly by how it’s built upon
by strong care for each other. It’s not
just by watching each other’s back at all times, but also through being impressed by their lifestyles. Connie is
easily impressed by how big and grand Steven’s role as a Gem is up to the point
that she believes that he wouldn’t really be interested in simple movies, but
Steven also sees value in Connie’s lifestyle as an average kid who’s very
studious, enjoys movies, and plays tennis.
It’s just great that although they’re both different, Steven and Connie
appreciate each other for who they are no matter what. Also great is that this leads to an exciting
moment where they take out the explosive-shooting robot with Steven’s Gem role
in the form of using a sword stored in Lion’s mane (the background of which
expanded on in a future cartoon) combining with Connie’s tennis skills. The ending of the two friends happily
watching Dogcopter with Lion is
easily the most fitting way to cap what we’ve seen off. We’re really given a lot of interesting stuff
here with the insight into how Lion works, new assets to Steven’s growth as a
Gem, and his sweet friendship with Connie at the center. It all comes together as an incredible
cartoon. 10/10
