Too Short to Ride
The abilities of Gems are some of the most noteworthy pieces of this show’s lore, and this cartoon shows that they’re the kind you wish you could have.
The principal characters are the ever short Steven, Amethyst, and Peridot without her limb enhancers.  This team-up is a fitting not just because they’re all small, but they’re the characters Peridot has the best relationship with.  Befriending Steven is a given considering his friendly nature, as shown in the beginning when he offers Peridot a tablet whose features make up for her lost finger screens.  Amethyst, on the other hand, has a previously established connection with Peridot who held her in highest regard based on the customs of Homeworld she used to follow.  Now they have more legit bond as Amethyst invites Peridot to join her and Steven at Beach City’s amusement park Funland.
Before, Funland was a backdrop for a few mostly lesser cartoons, but for what it brings for the characters, this cartoon is the best use of the location.  The time at Funland is enhanced by the special Gem abilities, at least from two of the three characters.  The ability on display is shapeshifting, something Amethyst does a lot, and it’s what helps her and Steven enjoy themselves. They stretch themselves to be tall enough to ride a roller coaster, enjoy funhouse mirrors, and win a rigged ring toss.
As for Peridot, something’s clearly up with her when she doesn’t come along and shapeshift with Steven and Amethyst, especially since we’ve been led to believe that all Gems can do it.  She stands around and uses her new tablet until the sight of a big alien doll as a prize at the ring toss convinces her to join the fun.  When Amethyst’s shapeshifting landing one ring isn’t enough for the doll, the truth comes out that Peridot is so negative about shapeshifting because she can’t do it herself.  Her depressed way of admitting this is an interesting change of pace.  Peridot mostly makes herself look like the best and smartest Gem of all, but lamenting about what she can’t do makes her feel the opposite way, making herself better-rounded.
Following some enjoyable attempts to help Peridot shapeshift, there’s interesting depth to why she can’t do it that also adds to the lore and history of the show.  Relating to the need for Gem colonies, resources on Homeworld are dwindling, so when Peridot was created for the second era of Gems, she didn’t come with shapeshifting.  This small tidbit alone makes the cartoon stand out.  We didn’t have to go this deep with Peridot’s inability, but we did, and it says a lot about her and Homeworld.
Through it all, Amethyst is mature and tries to get it through Peridot that she’s fine the way she is.  However, when she takes Peridot’s tablet and throws it away, Peridot ends up saving it by controlling the metal it’s made of.  There’s something inspiring about this where you might not be able to do one thing, but you can still surprise yourself with a new great ability.  Would it have been stronger if Peridot ended the cartoon fine with who she is without discovering she has this power?  Yes, but since controlling metal is much like how she controlled her old limb enhancers and we continue to see this ability, the ending works as it is.
That’s not even accounting for that adorable hug when Peridot finally wins that alien.
The cartoon turns out to be a great one to develop Peridot’s character and the nature of this show all unfolding in a place as fun as an amusement park called Funland.

'Toon Reviews 6: Steven Universe Season 1 Episode 11

Arcade Mania

When it comes to cartoons that center on Steven doing a fun, kid-friendly activity in Beach City, he’s a perfect fit for the type of plot considering his personality.  As for the Crystal Gems, with the possible exception of Amethyst, they don’t really seem like a good fit given how seriously they take their job of protecting Earth.  Plus, as this cartoon makes perfectly clear, because the Gems are a race of aliens, they don’t have as good as an understanding to the things Earth provides unlike their half-human asset.  The plot has Steven offer to take the Gems out for a fun time at Funland Arcade, which is a very nice and thoughtful move on his part.  However, given the Gems' lack of understanding of Earth things, including fun stuff like arcades, they seem confused by how to operate the various games Steven sets them up with.  That said, their confusion makes for some funny scenes and reactions.  My personal favorites involve Pearl struggling with a driving game that requires her to crash into stuff.  Then there’s Garnet who’s set up to play a rhythm game called Meat Beat Mania.  It’s a tough game for most people, but Garnet becomes so entranced by the game that she advances very easily.  As the cartoon goes on though, Garnet’s attachment to the game becomes an issue when she not only stays and plays it overnight, but the next day she’s so engrossed with it that she doesn’t even notice that Steven, Pearl, and Amethyst are being attacked by Gem monsters called Drill Parasites.  She’s so engrossed that Steven actually has to try and snap her out of it.  He tries taking off her shades (which reveals that she has three eyes, one of her many unusual traits), and beating her at Meat Beat Mania, but doesn’t snap her out until he destroys the system.  Relating to what I said about how the Gems don’t feel like a good fit for fun activity plots, Garnet getting so attached to a frivolous arcade game is very hard to believe.  She’s proved herself as the wisest and takes Gem work seriously, so she shouldn’t get so wrapped up in something like this, especially when her comrades are in trouble.  She doesn’t even use her attachment to the game to teach Steven a lesson or even to defeat the Drill Parasites, so there’s really no good excuse for Garnet’s portrayal here, and since it takes up most of the cartoon, the whole experience is pretty frustrating.  Not to mention Steven ends up paying for the mess she caused in the end.  While it’s sad that this cartoon really doesn’t do justice for Garnet’s character, it has enough charm and humor to make it enjoyable enough to sit through. 7/10

'Toon Reviews 6: Steven Universe Season 1 Episode 8

Serious Steven

It’s no secret that at this point in the show, Steven is a total goof even when going on important Gem missions.  It does make sense for him to be this way now, especially since he goes through major character growth as the show goes on, but it can get frustrating to see him constantly not pay attention, make boneheaded decisions and plans destined to fail, and just not be totally with all the Gems when they do their thing.  These concerns are still apparent here in which the Crystal Gems bring Steven along on a mission where they must retrieve a Gem from a Pyramid Temple in the middle of a Gem Battlefield covered in large swords and overgrown with strawberries.  He freaks out over little things like butterflies in his eyes, can’t keep himself from touching unusual stuff, and mostly looking tough and serious without actually being those things.  His intentions are easy to see and him being upbeat in this situation is kind of cute, but at the same time, Steven being way too easy-going doesn’t really work.  Still, it’s nice that out of all the Crystal Gems, Garnet believes that Steven can provide good use for the team as proven when she openly chooses to have him come with her when the group splits up.  Even then, Steven still doesn’t prove very useful on the mission with Garnet doing all the work and Steven mostly needing her to carry him.  Thankfully, in his own way, Steven ultimately rises as the big hero of the mission.  He keeps feeling dizzy as he travels through the temple which makes him think back to when he caused the destruction of the teacup ride at the amusement park, Funland, which is shown to us in a pretty funny scene.  This comes in to play when the Crystal Gems wonder how they keep ending up back to where they started no matter where they go in the temple.  With his dizziness in mind, Steven figures that the reason they all end up back where they started is because the temple keeps spinning around, just like the teacup ride.  His theory proves correct, and that helps the group to solve the mystery of the temple and retrieve its Gem.  So, while Steven’s goofball ways aren’t really welcome in a serious mission setting and can get old quick, the fact that he saves the day in the end is a shining moment for him, and gives this cartoon some value. 8/10
