Action News (not
to be confused with the Plaza Short)
One
great thing about the cast is how any character can get their own cartoon, even
side characters. Take Dynamite Watkins
of Action News for instance. As an
anchorwoman, she’s one of the most fun characters, approaching her job with
style and excitement. This means she’s a
great choice to have her own cartoon to develop her role and character. Also, while most cartoons about side
characters are their own thing, this one foreshadows events to come.
The opening news sequence shows Dynamite
Watkins’ appeal as she goes over a report at a usual Boxmore attack on Lakewood
Plaza Turbo in energetic fashion.
There’s also new and creative elements to her character and job. Her boss is a big cheese literally named the Big Cheese, and she has her own superpower
charged through lights, cameras, and TV viewership. It’s revealed when interviewing a reluctant
Darrell about secret plans Lord Boxman may have, and she gets to the truth by
emitting an electrical blast from her microphone at him.
Dynamite also shows a lot of effort to have
her viewers know the whole truth. She
suspects connection to Boxmore’s actions throughout the season and promises her
audience to uncover what big plans the company may have. This is a noble cause, but it appears that
the Big Cheese doesn’t approve of it.
While she does comply with the scripted fluff piece her boss wants at
first, Dynamite is quick to see the lack of substance and strives tell the
truth the audience deserves. Nevertheless, this gets her suspended. As a result, she awesomely
takes matters into her own hands.
With a
sentient camera, Cam, she sets off to expose Boxmore’s plans herself while Cam
keeps his lens on her which is the best source of news reporting power she has. Cam isn’t enough though since Dynamite’s
powers are unable to interrogate anyone, but she still presses on to learn the
secrets about Boxmore however she can. Without
any powers, Dynamite finds that Lord Boxman has bought supplies from many
cities and investigates a truck pulling in.
When the investigation gets so intense that the apparent truck driver,
the Big Cheese, depowers Cam, Dynamite still fights to get the truth. At the same time she shows that she knows
that helping in general is more important than doing so as part of a news
show. That said, she gets enough power
anyway when all of Lakewood Plaza Turbo arrives to shoot her with camera
phones. This does technically devalue
her vow to get the truth without powers, but what occurs is still great to see.
She becomes powerful enough to get to interview the Big Cheese’s truck even
turning the scene into a talk show. This
gives the show something to look forward to when before it explodes, the
truck reveals that Lord Boxman is building a new super robot with all the parts
he’s been buying. It’s a shining
satisfaction after what a likable character like Dynamite Watkins went through.
It's capped off with her going back to the job she loves with the Big Cheese being
locked in the closet and impersonated by Lord Boxman the whole time.
As for the newly revealed super weapon, its
credibility is revealed as Dynamite thanks the audience for helping her uncover the
truth. Lord Boxman himself eerily states that everyone will find out why he’s
building a super robot soon. That little
moment shows that this fun adventure has more value to it than one might
think.
Along with the ever-awesome Dynamite Watkins at the center and an interesting news report atmosphere, this is
one of the most thrilling shows of character for the series.
