'Toon Reviews 4: The Loud House Season 1 Episode 16

Attention Deficit

The cartoon, “Overnight Success” revealed that Lincoln’s best friend, Clyde, has two dads which proved to be quite groundbreaking for introducing the first married same-sex couple in an animated family show.  This cartoon takes the time to show us what this couple is like.  They do so by showing both Clyde’s dads, Harold and Howard, operating their home life normally like any family would, and no one ever considers this lifestyle weird which is certainly a fine representation for all gays out there in my way of thinking.  They also maintain a calm, well-ordered lifestyle that’s very different from what we see in the Loud House.  This lifestyle comes into play in the main plot in which Lincoln needs help with a volcano project, but his parents are too busy giving attention to his sisters to offer any to him.  You can imagine what a relief it is for Lincoln when he experiences Clyde’s dads’ lifestyle as well as all the attention they give him.  However, some of his sisters find out about what he’s up to and want in on Clyde’s dads’ attention.  While they do try to keep it secret, which includes a really cute pantomime scene from Luna, all the sisters end up finding out about Clyde’s dads which results in them taking advantage of Howard and Harold and comes with a lot of amusing personality clashing of Clyde’s good-natured dads and Lincoln’s 10 out-of-control sisters.  As the sisters seem oblivious of the stress they’re causing Clyde’s dads, Lincoln can’t help but be concerned that the attention he’s getting at Clyde’s is now no different than what he gets at home.  However, this leads into the most heartfelt moment of the cartoon.  While doing their thing, the sisters thank Lincoln for introducing them to this attention.  The heart of this moment is that it once again enforces that Lincoln truly is not alone with dealing with the hardships of growing up in a big family, which is one of the show’s strongest themes.  In this case, all his sisters are needy of some attention, not just him.  If that’s not enough, when Lincoln returns home, Mom and Dad are completely open to give his volcano the help it needs showing that they love all 11 of their children equally and no matter how long it takes, they’ll always find time for all of them.  This makes the Loud parents some good parents to get behind, and considering what Lincoln realized about attention in the family, what he receives from his parents feels earned.  As you can tell, this cartoon is a package of pleasing aspects with its respectable portrayal of a same-sex couple, fun character moments, and a further look at how alike Lincoln and his sisters really are. 9/10
Out on a Limo

Watching the cartoons that make up the first season of this show, it’s hard not to notice that all the Loud siblings are capable of having jerky moments.  This isn’t a problem since it makes them more human, but there are times when some of their jerky moments go too far and end up making said sibling unlikable thus hurting the respective cartoon.  This very thing happens with Lincoln in this cartoon and it really works against it from being the best it can be.  It actually starts out fun and good with Lincoln enjoying the luxury of being driven around in a limo he won for the day after eating a bunch of mustard.  He even shows off some loyalty to his sisters by promising to take them down to a fast food joint called Burpin’ Burger when he’s had his fun.  Then everything changes when he meets a rich man named Tetherby who thinks Lincoln is actually rich.  There’s nothing wrong with Lincoln spending his time with Tetherby, even though the man proves to not do actual rich people justice by pushing the belief that all rich people are judgmental jerks who only judge people by their social class.  The real kicker comes in when it’s time for Lincoln to take his sisters to Burpin’ Burger, and he just buys into Tetherby’s belief that family get in the way of being rich which is more important, ultimately going back on his promise to them and acting like a big shot even though he only has the limo for a day.  What the serious heck?!  Why would Lincoln get the urge to do something like this?  He loves his sisters a lot and has a good relationship with them.  It’s just so unlike him to turn his back on them just because of a random rich guy.  That said, it’s great that Lincoln does face some appropriate consequences for his behavior that snap him back into reality, and the ending is extremely satisfying when he gets the limo for an extra day and uses it to make things up to his sisters and they all give Tetherby a mustard beating he really deserves.  There really is a lot of fun and enjoyment to much of this cartoon, but the fact that Lincoln just so easily brushed his sisters aside for something that wasn’t even remotely worth it cost it quite a bit of potential value. 7/10
