'Toon Reviews 4: The Loud House Season 1 Episode 5

Project Loud House

Now, here’s a cartoon where everything great about this show comes together to bring about a strong, memorable experience.  It follows a simple story of Lincoln attempting to get his sisters ready for school on time and make sure nothing happens to his school project which is a diorama of his family.  It doesn’t sound like much, but the way they execute it makes it come off as really fun, and at times heartfelt.  A lot of this is due to how prominently each of Lincoln’s sisters are shown as they get ready for the day and also display the great appeal of their personalities.  Some of the ways they really liven the story up include Luna providing the background “man with a plan” music at Lincoln’s request, Luan constantly trying to get someone with a pail of water as part of a prank, Lynn rushing around the house looking for appropriate sports gear, Lana and Lola getting into petty fights for Lincoln to settle, and Lucy popping up and scaring Lincoln with the intent of sharing a poem.  They, and the other sisters, are especially successful in making Lincoln’s challenge entertaining because it’s easy to see that everything they do is just part of their daily routine, with no sign of any malicious intent.  This is the most apparent when we get to the heartfelt element of the cartoon.  Towards the end, despite all his best efforts, Lincoln messes up and his diorama gets destroyed.  While we as an audience can’t help but feel bad for Lincoln, it’s not long before we get an example that despite their quirky ways of going about their lives, all his sisters show how much they really do love each other, by helping Lincoln pull off his project and that gets him a well-deserved grade.  As a result, this is a payoff that stands as one of the show’s most satisfying as of now.  So much emphasis is put on the appeal of the Loud sibling’s personalities, funny situations, and the strong family bonds leading me to consider this cartoon as top-tier material. 10/10
In Tents Debate

I’m sure it’s a difficult part of life to find yourself in the middle of a debate where one person or group of people want to do one thing while another wants to do something else.  This is what Lincoln goes through when he convinces Mom and Dad to consider two different vacation ideas, Aloha Beach or an amusement park called Dairyland, as opposed to the usual camping trip.  With it being up to the siblings to decide where they want to go, Lincoln’s 5 girly sisters vote for the beach while his 5 tomboy sisters vote for Dairyland, leaving Lincoln to cast the deciding vote.  From then on, much of the rest of the cartoon features the two groups of sisters pulling all kinds of enjoyable stunts to convince Lincoln that their vacation spot is the best.  These moments are great fun on their own, but there’s one thing that makes the whole experience kind of interesting.  Like most cartoons that follow this convention, we go on to see both groups of sisters try to get their way through more unfair means by showing off something bad about the other vacation spot.  The interesting part is that Lincoln is somewhat in the wrong too.  He enjoys the treatment his sisters give him so much that he goes on to take advantage of it, neglecting to make the final decision like he’s supposed to.  These actions from everyone end up raising the tension that causes Lincoln some considerable pain after experiencing the negatives aspects of the vacation spots and all his sisters as opposed to just 5 to be mad at him for stalling the final decision.  This is fine and makes logical sense for this story, but unfortunately, the payoff for all this isn’t all that satisfying.  Everyone is to blame for the pain and frustration, so they all learn something before getting a happy ending.  Well, for this ending, the family ends up going to the initial campgrounds for their vacation and while the sisters have a good time, Lincoln ends up serving them and constantly getting the short end of the stick and none of the sisters feel any remorse for the pain they caused their brother.  It’s good that Lincoln’s glad his sisters are happy, but it’s impossible to be completely satisfied if he’s not having a good time too.  Still, this cartoon is good for its humor, most of its character moments and relatability, but if it wasn’t for the ending, I’d probably like it a lot more. 8/10
